US News Employment Data

I am pleased to report further on our 2006 employment data. As I previously announced, the National Association for Law Placement (NALP) has given us our official report of employment data for the class that graduated in 2006. According to NALP, a full 88.6% were employed and another 1.4% were pursuing another degree on a full-time basis, for a total of 90% engaged in those two activities. The reporting rates and the employment rates are not only consistent with our historical rates, but better than the classes that graduated in 2005 and 2004, respectively. (The survey response rate actually is 96.5%, not 100%.)

Our Law School, like all accredited law schools, provides the NALP data to the ABA on annual basis. The US News & World Report rankings are based in part on the ABA date, but US News has its own formula for calculating “employment.” Associate Dean David Moran and US News Action Committee Chair John Rothchild have calculated our US News employment percentage. Based on the formula used this year, it should be approximately 94.2%.

To offer context, this employment rate is higher than that of any school in the US News fourth tier this year and higher than the mean and the median of schools in the third tier this year. It is likely that all schools will continue to improve in this regard.

It remains critical for everyone, however, to continue efforts to place our students and graduates, as well as to ensure high response rates to the annual employment survey. Please join me in this effort to sustain our historic leadership role within the legal community of the city and the state. Thank you for your attention.
